Vaping and e-cigarettes: A Threat to the Well-being of School Children

In recent years, vaping and e-cigarettes have gained popularity among school children who are enticed by the allure of looking ‘cool’ and ‘adventurous’. However, what might seem like harmless fun can have severe consequences on physical, mental, emotional, and social health of these youngsters.

The editorial of The Lancet Child & Adolescent Health journal categorically mentions that, “Despite being marketed as a safer alternative to cigarettes, e-cigarettes are highly addictive and harmful. The high nicotine content (even in some products labelled “nicotine-free”) can lead to dependency over time, posing a unique risk to the developing brain. Emerging evidence suggests adverse effects on long-term development of brain structure and function, as well as potential changes in neurocognition and behaviour. E-cigarettes also contain chemicals harmful to young lungs (e.g., ultra fine particles, volatile organic compounds, heavy metals), resulting in adverse cardiopulmonary effects, chronic bronchitis, asthma exacerbations, and lung damage.”

“While the marketing and sale of electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes) in India is forbidden since September, 2019, vaping represents a significant risk to the health and safety of Indian adolescents. Though the prevalence of youth e-cigarette use in India remains unknown, paediatricians are often brought to provide care to youth who vape”- reports Indian Paediatrics journal.

As responsible educators and parents, it is crucial to understand the harmful effects of vaping and equip our children with the knowledge to avoid bad company and steer clear of potentially habit-forming substances.

Physical Health

Vaping devices contain harmful chemicals and toxins that are inhaled directly into the lungs. These substances can cause respiratory issues such as coughing, shortness of breath, and asthma like conditions. Long-term use of e-cigarettes may lead to chronic lung diseases and even irreversible lung damage. Additionally, the addictive nature of nicotine in many vaping products can lead to increased heart rate, high blood pressure, and addiction, potentially setting the stage for future substance abuse.

Mental and Emotional Health

While some young individuals may perceive vaping as a way to cope with stress or fit in with peers, it can actually aggravate mental health issues. The nicotine in e-cigarettes can negatively impact brain development, leading to attention and learning problems. Moreover, vaping has been linked to increased anxiety, depression, and mood swings in young users. This not only affects academic performance but also hinders emotional growth and well-being.

Social Health

The desire to look ‘cool’ and conform to the peer pressure can lead school children into the trap of bad company. Vaping is often glamorized in media and social circles, influencing impressionable minds to experiment with these substances.

Vaping being a new trend in India, parents and elders mostly are unaware of its harmful effects. Without parental control and guidance, the young adolescent children often succumb to negative peer pressure and fall into unhealthy habits and compromise their social well-being. Furthermore, this association with bad company can alienate children from positive influences, academic and extra-curricular activities, hindering personal growth and success.

Avoiding Bad Company

Parents and teachers play a pivotal role in helping school children avoid bad company and making informed decisions. Here are some suggestions for both to consider:

1.
Open Communication: Encourage open and honest discussions with your adolescent

children about the risks and consequences of vaping and other drugs. Provide accurate information and listen attentively to children's concerns.

2.
Role Models: Set a positive example by abstaining from smoking or vaping. Children often look up to adults and emulate their behaviour.

3.
Education Programs: Encourage them to participate in educational programs in the school that raise awareness about the harmful effects of vaping and drugs etc.

4.
Alternative Activities: Encourage children to participate in extracurricular activities, sports, or hobbies that promote a healthy lifestyle and provide a sense of belonging.

5.
Building Self-esteem: Help children build self-esteem and confidence so that they can resist negative peer pressure and make independent, responsible choices.

Vaping and e-cigarettes may promise a sense of adventure and belonging, but the price of indulging in such habits can be too high for school children. The detrimental impact on physical, mental, emotional, and social health is a stark reality that should not be underestimated. By understanding the risks and providing guidance on how to avoid bad company, we can empower our children to make informed choices and lead healthy, fulfilling lives. Let us prioritize their well-being and guide them towards positive paths that will shape their futures for the better.
